The Rise and Fall of Internet Giants [Infographic]

Posted on

How long does the reign of an online empire last? Taking a retrospective view of the rise and fall of internet heavyweights such as AltaVista, AOL and MySpace, this infographic from CenturyLink shows that the median lifespan of an internet giant is approximately 11 years.

Following the cyclic logic, should we expect to see Facebook’s descent pretty soon? Has the social network only have three years of life left, or is this just a speculation? (more…)

When Social Media Doesn’t Work

Posted on

Social media can be massively beneficial to your business but it is a double-edged sword, especially if you don’t play the game fairly. And even some of the biggest players sometimes fail to impress.

A list of 14 epic social media flops published by Econsultancy demonstrates that even the biggest brands often fail to get their message out there in the most appropriate way.

L’Oreal, for instance, went so far as to create a fake blog (!), showering it with laudatory testimonials. And sub sandwich restaurant chain Quiznos showed bad taste by spoofing the viral YouTube porn video 2 Girls 1 Cup and calling it 2 Girls 1 Sub. Not the most appetising experience, considering the sickening associations that it may evoke… although, we agree, the Playboy models are pretty attractive.

Join the Twittamentary Buzz

Posted on

From the contrived ‘Twilebrity’ to the pompous-sounding ‘twitterati’, the internet teems with composite words, with brand new ones entering the unofficial Twitter dictionary– or shall we say ‘twictionary’- every single day.

Yet another Twitter term is about to be born into being with the premiere of a film dedicated to the microblogging phenomenon at the Oldenburgh International Film Festival tomorrow. But this time the neologism promises to leave a deep footprint on the Twitter lexicon.

Inbound Marketing: More than Social Media

Posted on

Marketing to advertising savvy consumers just became a lot more difficult. Relying on traditional marketing techniques fails to cut through the noise of media communications which consumers are exposed to, and actively avoid, each day. Think about how many adverts & promos you saw this morning whilst travelling to work. Did you notice them all? Can you remember half of them? No. That is the point. Traditional marketing is interruptive. It demands our time and attention on its terms and not when we want to digest it. Inbound marketing is different…

The Top 5 Virals of 2010

Posted on

I recently came across an Infographic posted by Altop that listed the most viral brands and titles of 2010. I’ll be honest; I was pretty surprised when Shakira came out on top with the Waka Waka World Cup song, even though I probably played this a few times myself in June! Although this was focused primarily on brands there are a few viral that I loved in 2010 that did not appear on the list. I have therefore decided to create my very own Top 5 Viral’s 2010 according to me!

1. The Heineken Champions League Activation

Heineken ActivationHeineken came up with a fake event combining poetry and classical music on the same night that AC Milan were playing Real Madrid in a crucial Champions League football match. Together with many accomplices ranging from bosses to girlfriends they managed to convince a host of AC Milan fans to attend the event and potentially miss out on the game. Have a look… (No football fans were harmed in the making of this, they get to see the game). The result of this campaign were staggering, 1.5 million people watched it live on TV, 10 million on the news the next day and it spread rapidly across social media  generating 5 million unique visits in 2 weeks! Not bad!

2. Pianoman Improv on Chat Roulette

Chat Roulette is quite frankly a very strange place! This is however a gem of what can be achieved with some quick thinking. Although this wasn’t a branded campaign it, to date, has received well over 7 million views on You Tube and countless shares across the social media sphere. You have to check this out, the ‘Fireflies’ bit is amazing!

3. Questions with the Old Spice Guy

This campaign is genius! The last I remember of Old Spice was it sitting in my Grandad’s bathroom but from now on it will be remember for this guy, the Old Spice guy. After the initial success of this viral they created a number of response videos, (including a marriage proposal) to questions and comments posted to the Old Spice guy on Twitter. This is a fantastic example of who to integrate your social media efforts and really launched Old Spice into a new a modern stratosphere.

4T-Mobile Airport

Filmed in October in Heathrow Airport, this was T-Mobiles second viral campaign and it is awesome! It was a part of their Welcome Back campaign and to date has received an impressive 6 million plus views. They integrate this well with their Facebook page and is another great example of how social media channels should work together.

5.  All Blacks  and  Brumbies

You get two videos for the price of one here. As you may have guessed from the Heineken video I am a keen sports fan and I love these rugby related viral’s!The original, but possibly not the best, features a number of the New Zealand All Black rugby teams performing some outrageous tricks in training. Many people immediately questions whether all of these skills could be possible so an Australian team, The Brumbies, decided to show how easy it would be to these tricks….The All Blacks ‘Give it your All’ campaign is one of the best examples of a sports team using Facebook in my opinion. While they have a modest half a million fans, I think it is a great example of how creative content can make you feel closer to and more a part of a brand.

What were your favourite virals of last year? Have you seen any good ones so far in 2011?
